THE SILENT MASTERPIECE

THE SILENT MASTERPIECE

Crafted as a proprietary blend of Port wines from the 1971 harvest, APICIVS 1971 emerges after half a century in silence. Aged for 50 years in three French oak pipes, it remained untouched in quiet transformation — until it crossed into legacy.

Bottled in October 2021 — our Master Blender sealed the moment where patience and precision converged.

Each drop reflects the wisdom of its long repose and the intention behind its creation. Reserved, profound, and uncompromising, APICIVS 1971 offers not just rarity, but a sensory meditation — where structure, age, and purity align.

Some masterpieces are not created to be declared. They are meant to be discovered.

About APICIVS 1971

APICIVS 1971 opens with a quiet amber glow that deepens into polished mahogany, edged by a rare olive-green rim. Its aromas unfold with poise: eucalyptus honey, balsamic fennel, honeysuckle, beeswax and dried tangerine zest.

Hints of curry, black pepper and tobacco leaf bring gentle spice, wrapped in cedar resin and soft floral notes. On the palate, freshness lifts the richness. Honey, butterscotch and caramelised figs emerge with silken grace.

The finish is long and refined, echoing crème brûlée, wild herbs and citrus peel, in a final note of depth and light.

What the Robert Parker Wine Advocate says about APICIVS 1971

The 1971 APICIVS Colheita Tawny Port is a field blend bottled September 29, 2021, with a long cork after about 50 years in barrel. It comes in with 166 grams of residual sugar. Initially closed, indeed, in hibernation not long after bottling, this needed the extra couple of days I gave it to wake up.

THE RESCUED RARITY

THE RESCUED RARITY

From the depths of time, two forgotten casks emerged — silent witnesses to half a century of transformation. APICIVS 1972 is a proprietary blend of these two Port wines of the 1972 harvest, discovered in the Douro and promptly acquired by our house in 2018 alongside other rare finds, and preserved with reverence.

One cask held 302 litres, the other 236. Aged for 50 years in second-use French oak, unfiltered and barely touched, the blend was bottled in July 2022, marking the end of a long, quiet journey in wood.

More than a rarity, APICIVS 1972 is a quiet testament to what time perfects — and only the rarest moments reveal. It honours the unseen, the unspoken, and the nearly lost — now made eternal.

Some treasures are found. Others return to find us.

About APICIVS 1972

From the first glance to the endless finish, APICIVS 1972 reveals itself in layers of brilliance, unctuousness, and elegance.

Its colour transitions from amber to mahogany in a mesmerising dégradée. On the nose, a rare opulence: eucalyptus honey, balsamic fennel, honeysuckle, and hints of beeswax and tobacco leaf.

On the palate, it is unexpectedly fresh and silky, with echoes of dried citrus zest, butterscotch, and caramelised figs. The finish is endless — sweet, spicy, balsamic — with notes of crème brûlée, pepper, and eucalyptus blossom honey.

What the Robert Parker Wine Advocate says about APICIVS 1972

The 1972 APICIVS Colheita Tawny Port is a field blend that was bottled with a long cork on July 22, 2022, after about 50 years in barrel.

It comes in with 190 grams of residual sugar. This has a little more energy than the 1971, but it opened equally closed.

THE ULTIMATE RARITY

THE ULTIMATE RARITY

True rarity is not proclaimed; it is recognised. APICIVS 1975 finds those who value time, perfection, and all that transcends the ordinary.

For five decades, this extraordinary vintage has matured within the cellars of a time-honoured Port house. Time has shaped its structure, deepened its spirit, and elevated its essence. 556 litres were meticulously selected by the APICIVS Master Blender for their exceptional quality, representing the purest expression of what this vintage could achieve.

Bottled on its jubilee, this Colheita Port stands as a testament to time, mastery, and the unyielding quest for perfection. Each bottle captures a unique, unrepeatable moment, reserved for those who understand that some experiences are beyond acquisition — they are destined.

Some creations defy explanation. They must be experienced. Some choices are beyond deliberation. They impose themselves.

About APICIVS 1975

From its deep mahogany hue with red glints and a soft greenish rim, APICIVS 1975 reveals the quiet nobility of half a century in wood. The nose opens with a rare, ethereal lift of fine varnish (ethyl acetate), soon enveloped by delicate vanilla, balsamic liquorice, and bittersweet honey, mingling with freshly cured tobacco leaves.

Opulent raisins and caramelised figs follow in graceful succession, giving way to rich crème brûlée, warm sandalwood, and floral whispers of honeysuckle. Subtle butterscotch and crystallised white fruits round off a deeply evocative bouquet.

On the palate, it is both rich and vibrant, with a striking acidity. The finish is long and lush, unfolding in gentle layers of vanilla, honey, and the delicate memory of crystallised white fruit.

Single Harvest Tawny Port

APICIVS 1971

Single Harvest Tawny Port

THE SILENT MASTERPIECE

A bright mahogany core gives way to a broad amber rim tinged with discreet olive-green hues — a quiet prelude to what follows.

The nose opens with a balsamic lift, where sawn oak and cedar set a noble tone. Beneath, a dense core of brown sugar, cane honey, roasted coffee beans and walnuts emerges, enriched by subtle buttery accents and a delicate saline trace. Gentle notes of curry and sweet-and-sour wild honey mingle with green tea, all building in a graceful crescendo of aromatic complexity. Nuances of wildflowers, pollen and dry herbs unfold gradually, each wrapped in a refined balsamic breath. A faint echo of cardamom, black pepper and tobacco leaf drifts throughout, adding dimension and warmth.

On the palate, it is full and sweet, immediately unctuous and vibrant. Distinct flavours of walnut, dried tangerine peel, coffee and cardamom rise in layers, held aloft by striking acidity.

The finish is remarkably long — a lingering fusion of freshness and depth, where wild honey and dried physalis bring a final sweet-and-sour flourish to a near-endless aftertaste.

What the Robert Parker Wine Advocate says about APICIVS 1971

“The 1971 APICIVS Colheita Tawny Port is a field blend bottled September 29, 2021, with a long cork after about 50 years in barrel. It comes in with 166 grams of residual sugar. Initially closed, indeed, in hibernation not long after bottling, this needed the extra couple of days I gave it to wake up. Then, it was a different beast. Rich, smooth and creamy, this is a succulent Tawny that is a bit sugary, but it also has compensating freshness and complexity. It’s concentrated in terms of unctuous texture but is otherwise quite elegant, even understated. There’s not a lot of energy, but it has gentle harmony. The fruit is certainly mature, but the brightness and the sugary decadence make it seem a lot younger. For those celebrating a birthday and even for those who are just looking for a good drink, this will be a pleasure. This release contains 500 bottles, which is all the producer has left. There will be no more. As of yet, there is no importer, but that may change, and there were plans for export. Check in at https://apicivs.com/ for subsequent updates there. It runs about 553 euros in Portugal.

Note: The brand here is actually “Apicius,” but the label looks like “APICIVS,” with the “u” looking like a “v,” as in olden days. It’s still meant to be “APICIUS” since the “v” is not really a “v”; that’s just a design issue. The company representative says: “The brand in use is APICIUS, but we recently also registered the brand APICIVS….We thought it would be interesting to have the spelling of the brand name in Latin, i.e., a “V” for a ”U,” on the label; the new logo of the brand is actually with a “V”. The landing page is apicivs.com but if you go to apicius.pt you’ll be redirected to the same domain ‘apicivs.com.'”

At this point, it’s a coin flip as to which makes more sense to use in a tasting note, but I’ve stuck with what the producer wants, which is also what is on the label. So, that probably makes the most sense in terms of avoiding consumer confusion.

DPWEA stands for Douro and Port Wine Export Agency, d.b.a. exPort. They started exporting lesser-known Port brands in 2013, then started buying and selling bulk Port wines, but we focus on old and rare Port; we find and buy Port wines and prepare batches, some ready for bottling, some almost finished (just in need of fining), very old Port wines and rare vintages (Colheitas/Single Harvests). This year, we decided we should start bottling and selling some of these Ports under our own brand, which we redirected toward the premium and luxury markets….The 1971 vintage is more than a very rare vintage (harvest); these will be (most probably) the very last bottles of a 1971 Single Harvest Tawny Port to be put in the market.

THE RESCUED RARITY

A deep olive-green rim encircles a broad amber halo, gently fading into a mahogany core tinged with red glints — a visual testament to half a century of ageing.

The nose reveals immediate olfactory opulence and remarkable freshness. Honey forms the backbone, layered with an intensely balsamic aroma of wild fennel. Honeysuckle floral notes follow — slightly herbal and sour — enriched by beeswax, tobacco leaf and pollen. Hints of pepper and curry add lift and tension. Subtle aromas of butterscotch and pine nuts unfold alongside eucalyptus blossom honey, well-dried straw and delicate touches of sawn oak, cedar resin and beeswax. The bouquet continues to evolve, revealing dried tangerine zest, caramelised pear, and a persistent wild fennel signature, all framed by a gentle saline nuance.

On the palate, it opens unctuous and fresh, with honey and wild fennel leading into layers of dried citrus peel, soft smoke, and butterscotch. Nuances of walnuts, prunes and caramelised fig emerge, touched by honeysuckle and hints of spice.

The finish is endless — sweet yet fresh, balsamic and lightly spicy — evoking eucalyptus blossom honey, wild fennel, crystallised citrus, curry spice and fleeting impressions of crème brûlée and caramelised cherry.

What the Robert Parker Wine Advocate says about APICIVS 1972

“The 1972 APICIVS Colheita Tawny Port is a field blend that was bottled with a long cork on July 22, 2022, after about 50 years in barrel. It comes in with 190 grams of residual sugar. This has a little more energy than the 1971, but it opened equally closed. Overnight, it woke up alive and expressive, showing rich fruit and a long, deliciously sweet finish. It has a fair amount of energy, too, and complexity. It is certainly very mature, but it is still fresh enough to be bright and lively. The unctuous texture and serious concentration are its best features, though. It simply coats the palate, leading to that tasty finish. This runs around 550 euros in Portugal.

This release was launched on September 9 with just 500 bottles, which is all that was left. Each will come with a premium package, including an extra bar-top cork, booklet and certificate of authenticity.

This company’s name stands for “Douro and Port Wine Export Agency.” In 2013, they started acquiring and exporting “less-known Port wine brands from producers,” then began buying and selling bulk Port wines. Last year, they added their own brand, releasing the 1971. They have plans for regular 50-year releases.”

An intense balsamic liquorice note follows, entwined with bittersweet honey and the evocative scent of freshly cured tobacco leaves. Dark, sumptuous raisins unfold, alongside fleeting whispers of caramelised figs. As the bouquet deepens, a rich crème brûlée emerges, lifting again the elegant vanilla tones, shaded by the subtle warmth of sandalwood.
